I've utilised a Canon HV20 for a couple of years and have been really happy with it. I use the tiny camcorder when I travel and for more compact, far more informal situations when it really is not practical to break out the XL H1 and all the peripheral audio and lights gear. Functioning mostly on scripted low-budget productions with inexperienced and/or novice talent, I have located a second camera can often rescue a possibly disastrous situation when a performer forgets or garbles a line or when there's an awkward pause. It's usually tough to reduce to an additional just take from the exact same or a diverse angle due to continuity difficulties. A 2nd camera at a distinct angle enables the editor to cover a lot of faults. I desired a second camera to use in conjunction with my HV20 on two-camera shoots mostly when traveling. The HV40 was an apparent candidate; even so, I realize I am 1 of a vanishing breed of DV tape adherents. Not wanting to uncover myself stuck with two obsolete camcorders, I did a honest quantity of investigation. The HV40 promised the biggest compatibility involving footage from the two units, but numerous other models presented the benefit of higher versatility and possessing the ideal instrument for diverse circumstances. AVCHD has arrive a extended way in the previous few of years. When I bought the HV20, the maximum AVCHD bitrate on any camcorder was about 17 Mbit/s, in comparison to 25 mbit/s for mini DV. Canon's prime AVCHD model data at 24 Mbit/s, so the picture quality is equivalent in many respects. But AVCHD is nonetheless interlaced, whilst the HV40 presents native 24p, although it is admittedly not identical to the 24p over 60i on the HV20.I gave cautious thought to the Panasonic HDC-HS300, Sony HDR-HC9 and Canon HF S11/S100/S10 designs, in addition to the HV40. AVCHD offers better comfort and lengthier recording instances, but greater data compression, so decrease picture high quality, though the big difference is turning into much less discernable. In the finish, none of the options provided strengths that outweighed higher compatibility, but it was a tougher determination than two years back. In reality, it is a compromise. I would be a lot happier with a camera that recorded mini DV format on flash memory at 25 Mbit/s, type of a client model of the Focus Enhancements DTE recorders. Few that with a more quickly lens and a larger sensor and I would be a substantially happier camper. It is a superior little digital camera for outside use and for property films and such. I commonly attach a DM-50 directional microphone which slides into the multifunction shoe. I have not really edited collectively footage from the two camcorders, so can't comment. My biggest frustration in the choice process was trying to organize comparable specs on the cameras. How several consumers have the foggiest notion of what is meant by a one/2.7" sensor? [...

Now that the cost has come down, this cam is a superior buy. The reduced stars are for the miniSD card needed and to say Canon wake up! HV Digital camera line has a big subsequent why not deliver what they have been crying for from the HV20 days, acquire control!I have two professional Sony cameras that use tape, so this will serve as a deck and trip digital camera.I was heading to purchase the HV30. Then the HV40 arrived out, and waited till this camera's value came down. The very good about the camera is: measurement, HI-DEF image, HDMI, makes use of minidv tape, large HV collection adhering to/fan assistance/resale value, some guide controls, a button you can plan with a number of options and certainly it has firewire in/out (an item not outlined on Canons web page). Picture is not three chip excellent but sort of close. The not so good: It requires a out dated, challenging to come across miniSD card that is not incorporated with the camera.Focus and buttons are a joke. Must preset prior to you roll.Histogram is for image mode only, and short.Incredibly hard to hold and navigate rear menu buttons with your thumb.Be cautious, this camera can zoom in on an picture in actively playing back again mode. It will be recorded (on HDMI have not tested firewire)

Just received my HV40 these days. Its very good wanting, straightforward to use and I am thrilled that it plays effectively with Last Cut. I was truly concerned about that, my previous camera genuinely did not like exporting into my Mac. Nevertheless plowing via the manual but, practically nothing to challenging to recognize and the image quality is excellent even with no a light set-up (in daylight of training course). It is heavier then I expected, but I consider that a superior thing. I like a little heft. My only complaints are slight. The tape door doesn't close solidly, its obtained a tiny "wobble" to it. But, staying that the door is also your hand grip it can be visible at occasions. I also would have liked to have a HDMI cable included but, again that is small (element cable included). Overall I am happy with my buy. I get to do some genuine testing this weekend.

The HV40 is a excellent launching board into the visual globe of HD. With its one/two.7 inch, two.96 Megapixel CMOS sensor it can seize gorgeous 1080 HDV.Though in no ways built like a professional or prosumer camcorder, it has what it requires to get the occupation performed. This tiny inauspicious searching digital camera is packed with professional attributes that people today on a restricted price range would come across in a much more high-priced models, but not be in a position to locate in comparable designs from other producers. The most practical element of this digital camera is its ability to shift its capabilities from automatic to entirely guide. Guide handle more than shutter velocity, aperture, concentrate, frame amount, white harmony, audio, mild and dark values and even far more give the person a great amount of manage and imaginative flexibility. With these alternatives, the user is open up to examine and get full advantage of numerous shooting conditions even though getting ready to include the mark of their very own special design. Other extraordinary functions involve the SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer, Native 24p frame charge, a Customized button to which a feature may well be designated to conserve time from seeking as a result of the menus, an Highly developed Accessory Shoe Terminal and viewfinder (neither of which are obtainable on tapeless Vixia designs), and the capability to shoot to tape. Although tape based formats are dropping floor to newer card and drive based technologies, recording HDV to MiniDV tapes permits the person backwards compatibility with normal definition video clip, both shooting and the capacity to transfer older analog sources to digital. All in all, Canon's HV40 delivers way much more for your income by much than other HI-DEF camcorders out there currently.

The Vixia HV40 has great image high quality. Autofocus usually pulls a good sharp concentrate. The low-light capabilities are average. The onboard mic pics up good audio except it picks up camera usage noise. With an external microphone hooked up to it, it sounds wonderful and does not choose up digital camera utilization noise. The user interface is easy to navigate and adjust the options. The hotshoe cover generally gets in the way, it'd be far better just to get it off. Matches nicely in my hand, at ease operation. The playback buttons to view what you recorded, you have to press fairly firmly to use it...even the slightest launch of pressing the button aborts its use. The manual concentrate spinner point is tough to use, you can't pull a acurate focus, incredibly hard to focus with it. I would suggest finding the MFR (Manual Focus Ring) by irv style. Attaches to the front of the digital camera and makes pulling a focus uncomplicated. All round this is a excellent cam for the cost.
